Javi Bernatas is a Math Learning Coach in Prisma’s Middle School Program who started in the 22-23 school year.

Tell us a little bit about your background in education prior to joining Prisma. 

Before landing at Prisma, I embarked on an exciting educational adventure that lasted about eight years. I hopped around different corners of the world, teaching (and learning!) in different countries like Jordan, Egypt, Greece, and Vietnam. From small, cozy classes with five kids to bustling classrooms packed with 40+ eager learners, I've had the privilege of experiencing a wide range of teaching environments. Along the way, I gained a global perspective on education, allowing me to connect with students from diverse backgrounds. Now, I'm thrilled to bring my passion to the virtual realm with Prisma!

What is your favorite part about your role at Prisma?

Without a doubt, it’s the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with learners. This might sound surprising to some, but the virtual setting has allowed me to really get to know my students on a personal level. I have learned so much about their lives, passions, aspirations, and specific needs in ways that have surpassed what I experienced in face-to-face teaching. This unique connection enables me to provide tailored support and create a nurturing learning environment that meets their individual needs. Witnessing the growth and progress of my students as we build these relationships is incredibly fulfilling and rewarding.

What sets Prisma’s approach to math apart from traditional schools? 

I think it’s a combination of several key factors. First, our math lessons (known as Numbers Labs) are thoughtfully designed to be fun and engaging. We believe that when students enjoy the learning process, they become more motivated and eager to dive deep into different math concepts - which is exactly what we want.

Additionally, Prisma puts a strong emphasis on nurturing a growth mindset in our learners. We understand the value of encouraging students to embrace challenges and develop a positive attitude towards math. We achieve this by focusing on the learning process itself rather than solely fixating on outcomes. Understanding the underlying processes and reasoning behind mathematical concepts leads to deeper comprehension and application of math in real-life situations.

Last but definitely not least, at Prisma, we are constantly striving to improve. We actively seek feedback from learners and parents on a regular basis. By listening and incorporating their input, we ensure that our approach remains effective and aligned with the needs and preferences of our community.

If you could pick one skill that all kids should master to prepare for the world of the future, what would it be and why? 

That’s a great (and tough!) question. If I were to pick just one skill, it would probably be adaptability. The world is changing incredibly fast. Technology, industries and whole societies are rapidly evolving, and we can’t even imagine what tomorrow’s world will look like. So I think that navigating and embracing change has become essential. Adaptability involves resilience, flexible problem-solving, and cultivating a growth mindset — and by mastering adaptability, kids can become lifelong learners who are prepared to face the complexities of the future with confidence.

What do you like to learn about, or what is something new you learned recently? 

Politics and journalism are two of my passions. I love learning about those political decisions that promote the prosperity of different populations by addressing economic issues, employment, healthcare, education, etc. And journalists have the enormous responsibility to hold those in power accountable for their actions.

On a lighter note, I recently started traditional calligraphy classes and have really enjoyed immersing myself in a new practice!
