Angie Foucher is a Mentor Coach in Prisma’s Middle School Program who started in the 22-23 school year.

Where are you based? 

I live in Denver, Colorado where I was born and raised! 

Tell us a little bit about your background in education prior to joining Prisma. 

I started teaching in 2010 with “Teach for America.” This opportunity required me to move to Las Vegas, Nevada, where I met Claire, who is now Prisma’s Head of Middle School. I taught third grade for four years, then decided to move schools to teach fourth grade. After being a classroom teacher for eight years, I joined the leadership team at my school. I loved helping teachers improve their skills, but I missed my students in the classroom.  

What is your favorite part about your role at Prisma?

I love to meet one-on-one with my learners the most. I have the privilege of learning about their interests and the activities they are involved in. I leave each of my one-on-one meetings with great ideas and feeling happy!   

You earned a New Teacher of the Year Award when you taught in Las Vegas! And we know from your work at Prisma how amazing you are at building relationships with kids. What’s your approach to connecting with each learner?

As I build relationships with learners, I try to do the same with their parents and supporters. With learners specifically, I document their interests and important life events. I like to ask follow-up questions and mention those events in conversations as much as possible. I also enjoy telling jokes and riddles, which creates some buy-in as well! 

If you could pick one skill that all kids should master to prepare for the world of the future, what would it be and why? 

I think all kids should grow their intrapersonal skills. Our thoughts and actions begin within. When kids practice self-love, reflection, and discipline, they become better advocates for themselves, and overcoming adversity is not as difficult. Strong individuals come together to create stronger communities! 

What do you like to learn about, or what is something new you learned recently? 

I enjoy learning about life and cultures in other countries. I am an extremely social person and I want to be prepared to interact with anyone that I come across in life. This is also a great reason to travel more, which I love to do as well!
